Summary
Pharma Foodie is an on-going series – a collaboration between Learning Center Chef-Instructor Nina Lesser-Goldsmith and Nutritionist Kim Evans. In these classes we look at the value and pleasure of using food to treat, prevent, and address chronic disease. What a great concept! We work with our culinary “pharmacy” (food ingredients) to design dishes that will delight our tastes and senses for the sake of creating a foundation of good health. Specific case examples will be presented as a glimpse at how nutrition is part of functional and integrative health care solutions.
We all want to age gracefully, to slow the wrinkles, to keep our minds focused and our eyes bright. Who knew it could be so much fun and so delicious? It turns out, anti-aging, the process of slowing down the effects of aging, is best attended to by the foods we eat. In this edition of Pharma-Foodie, Learning Center Chef-Instructor and Registered Dietician Abby Wadsworth team up to share some fabulous dishes that can help you reduce the signs of aging. Anti-aging foods reduce free-radicals in the body to boost longevity and speed up metabolism. Think healthy brain, a good memory, clear vision, and the yum factor.

My passion about food and nutrition is reinforced by my awe of the human body. My work as a nutritionist reflects my love and appreciation of food and respect for the human body. Nutrition is the key to enhancing all that we do in life. By definition nutrition is the organic processed of being nourished. Food should be friend, fuel, and fun. My practice is grounded in the power of nutrition meeting the pleasure of eating.
I have over 20 years of experience working with individuals who wish to optimize their nutrition in order to live more fully in their bodies. My practice is based on a holistic philosophy that celebrates healthy eating and healthy bodies in an innovative, motivating, and supportive approach. Together we will set goals to work toward the type of relationship you wish to cultivate with food.
For some clients this may mean more traditional work of food and menu planning; what I call building a good solid base. In doing so, a foundation of health and trust in the body is built which allows for an exploration of deeper concerns. For other clients’ relationships to food is a catalyst for change. An authentic sense of connection to self comes to life through the subtleties of eating. In exploring relationships with food we will look at intuitive eating styles and the power of choice from a nutritional perspective. Some avenues to this exploration might include mindful eating experiences, collaborative shopping, and sharing of a meal. Some clients may wish to focus on the true power of nutrition to support life. My work with athletes looks at nutrition as a way to optimize performance and support the body in motion. For other clients this concept might involve looking at the therapeutic properties of foods as a means to enhance health and prevent disease.
Whether the work is to restore nutritional health, improve ones relationship with food, improve athletic performance, or treat and prevent disease my approach always remains client centered. I work collaboratively with my patients to set goals that move them in the direction of good self care as reflected by feeding ones self in a way that is healthy and enjoyable. Through education and a sharing of my own passion and respect for food, I invite my clients to contemplate their own desires through a deeper sense of awareness and trust in oneself. I see food and eating as a great vehicle to explore ones connection to self and the world around them. I understand and appreciate this power and the many functions it serve.
